I think the Big 12 is happy with WVU but wishes it had been more proactive


When A&M and Mizzou fled to the SEC, the Big 12 play could have been to add TCU, WVU, Pitt and Louisville. That was the play Oliver Luck tried to sell. I think the ACC offered Pitt and Syracuse when it found out (probably through Pitt) that the Big 12 was shopping.

When Pitt came off the table, the Big 12 stumbled by debating between WVU and Louisville instead of taking both when they were available. Louisville would have been a great bridge to WVU and would have made adding a school like Cincy or Memphis more attractive, or allowed for adding BYU in football only without diluting football or isolating WVU.

I think the Big 12 folks are happy with WVU. The Mountaineers have been relevant or better in football, men's and women's basketball, and women's soccer, which are the important, visible sports. It's a long trip to Morgantown but a lot of trips in that conference are long or difficult. That's the kind of feedback you get from reading the media in Oklahoma and Kansas, anyway.
